Thuya Wood – A Moroccan Miracle
Thuya (pronounced tweeya) is the name of this beautiful wood, grown only in Morocco. Essaouira, a tiny seaside village five hours drive south of Casablanca, begins the journey of the thuya. Here highly-trained artisans transform the hard burls into beautiful furniture, boxes, and statues for discriminating buyers from around the world. All through the village you can smell the cedar-like scent of the thuya as the artisans sand and polish the wood. Open a box and enjoy the exotic scent for yourself.
History
Thuya has been used since the days of Solomon and David when it was called thyine wood. The Greeks named it thuya, meaning sacrifice, because they used an oil distilled from it as incense in their religious ceremonies. The wood is as beautiful as it is fragrant and the Greeks and Romans vied with each other over furniture made from thuya. Today Moroccan artisans use the beautiful burled root wood to create unique and beautiful handcrafted items for you to treasure for a lifetime.

The harsh desert conditions force the tree to grow underground where, like a slow motion eruption, it grows into itself creating dense burls. Thuya is a rare wood, taking hundreds of years to grow large enough to be used by the artisans. |

Caring for Your Thuya: The beautiful finish on your thuya wood comes from dozens of thinly-applied coats of oil. To keep it looking radiant, put a drop of oil on a soft cloth and rub lightly.
For bowls: Wash your thuya bowls with a gentle dish detergent, dry with a soft cloth, and then apply a thin coat of oil. Avoid soaking. |
