Moroccan Hand Drums

The rhythms of Africa hand-delivered to your door by Hungry Lion Imports. Hand-made ashikos and dumbeks direct from Morocco to you. Ashikos can also be custom-made to your specifications.

Ashiko is a West African word meaning "freedom."  Ashiko drums are of a conical shape, constructed with a series of slats bonded to form the shell.  The tuning system is made with high strength, low stretch rope.  The animal skin heads can be natural (left) or pigmented (right).

These first-quality ashiko drums are custom-made for us by artisans in Essaouira, Morocco. The drums are fashioned of dense Moroccan thuya wood with goatskin head to create a beautifully balanced and strong sound with a sustained tone. Available with natural or pigmented head. 11” head x 21” tall.

Ceramic dumbeks with pigmented goatskin or natural fish skin heads. Small drums 6.5” head x 11” tall. Large drums 8” head x 16” tall.
